WalletHub considered entertainment and recreation, nightlife and parties, and costs.

SAN DIEGO, CA — It's no surprise that America's Finest City is also one of the most fun cities in the country, according to a new report.

San Diego just missed the top 20 in WalletHub's 2025 "Most Fun Cities in America" list. California cities earned several top spots in the ranking, highlighting the state's strong performance in entertainment, recreation and nightlife.

San Diego ranked 21st overall, according to the report.

"San Diego stands out as a city that truly has something for everyone, which is reflected in its No. 21 overall ranking," WalletHub analyst Chip Lupo told Patch. "The city shines in entertainment and recreation (No. 6), with top-notch beaches, parks, hiking trails, water sports, and a wide variety of restaurants and ice-cream shops. Its nightlife is solid, ranking No. 27, though it's not quite as vibrant as some of the larger cities.

San Diego, like most California cities, ranked low for affordability.

"The biggest challenge for locals is cost, as San Diego ranks No. 167 in affordability, meaning enjoying all the city has to offer can get expensive," Lupo said. "Still, for those who value variety and quality, San Diego offers plenty of ways to have fun year-round without feeling like you're missing out."

Researchers at the personal finance website compared 182 cities, including 150 of the most populated cities, using three metrics: entertainment and recreation, nightlife and parties, and costs.

Las Vegas took the top spot. The city, which happens to be a big destination for Californians, ranked No. 1 for entertainment and recreation, as well as No. 1 for nightlife and parties.

San Francisco ranked as the most fun city in the state and the seventh overall. Los Angeles ranked 17th and Sacramento ranked 30th, according to WalletHub.
