SAN ONOFRE, CA — Photographer Jordan Anast nabbed a shot that’s now the talk of the town when a great white shark breached behind a surfer at the San Onofre Surf Club’s annual contest Saturday.

The photo was taken around 11 a.m., Anast told the Orange County Register. Speaking to Patch, Anast said that most members of the crowd didn’t seem to notice when the shark breached, and many of those who did thought it was a dolphin.

Anast himself only realized what he had captured after he went back and looked at his camera’s viewfinder and “noticed the shark fins,” the photographer told Patch.

Tyler Warren, the surfer featured in the one-in-a-million photo, told Anast that he only heard a splash and did not see the shark at all.

According to the California State University Long Beach Shark Lab, if you see a shark when you are out in the water, the most important thing to do is keep your eyes on it and remain calm. If you are on a surfboard, you should point the nose of the board in the direction of the shark. In most cases, the shark is just passing by and may just be curious.
