​Sinkhole Shuts Down Highway Near San Diego Zoo Safari Park

A sinkhole shut down a stretch of SR-78 near San Diego Zoo Safari Park in the San Pasqual Valley area of San Diego.

SAN DIEGO, CA — A sinkhole shut down a stretch of the highway Monday near San Diego Zoo Safari Park in the San Pasqual Valley area of San Diego.

The sinkhole was reported shortly before 9 a.m. Monday near state Route 78 and Cloverdale Road, according to the California Highway Patrol's incident log.

Authorities shut down SR-78 between 15500 San Pasqual Valley Road, in front of the Safari Park, to Haverford Road in Ramona, according to the San Diego Police Department. A SigAlert was issued for the area.

Caltrans said eastbound and westbound SR-78 was closed between the entrance of the park and Bandy Canyon Road.

Westbound drivers were being detoured from Bandy Canyon Road to westbound Highland Valley Road to westbound Pomerado Road to Interstate 15, according to Caltrans. Semi-trucks were being detoured at Haverford Road.

Eastbound drivers were being detoured from the I-15 to eastbound Pomerado Road to eastbound Highland Valley Road to Bandy Canyon Road or state Route 67.
