  1. A billboard on the streets of Barrio Logan makes it clear: "One pill can kill." The message, created by a group of elementary school students at High Tech Middle Mesa, is an effort to warn about the dangers of fentanyl. Students raised funds to create the billboard, which costs $2,500 for one month, and they're accepting donations to keep it going. (NBC San Diego)
  2. A multi-state outbreak of Hepatitis A caused the recall of frozen organic strawberries from California Splendor and Scenic Fruit Company. These brands were sold at Trader Joe’s and Costco, as well as several other stores. If you purchased these products, dispose of them, or return them to the store for a refund. To find out if your bag of strawberries was recalled, check here. (NBC San Diego)
  3. No funds to buy a home? Get help from the California Dream For All Shared Appreciation Loan program. Low- and moderate-income residents, with incomes up to $211,000, can borrow funds for a down payment and closing costs to purchase homes now, and they can pay back the funds when the home is sold. The homeowner can keep 80% of the home's appreciation, while the program keeps 20% to pay back the loan. Check it out at calhfa.ca.gov. (KPBS)
  4. A collaboration between SDG&E and A Reason To Live encourages young artists to create and display their wildlife artwork in National City neighborhoods. The young artists are not only learning more about art, they're taking on leadership roles to make positive change in their community through arts education, creative skill-building and community development efforts. Hummingbirds Hatched at the San Diego Botanic Gardens
  • Twin hummingbirds!: "We had twins! Our resident hummingbird had set her nest at the beginning of our World of Orchids exhibition, picking a prime location. Now with the end of our show, we were able to see two babies peaking their heads out the nest and getting ready to make their way into the rest of the Garden. Next time you visit, be sure to keep an eye out for these small ones!" (San Diego Botanic Garden via Facebook)
  • Dedication year-round: "Let's give a roaring hip-hippo-hooray to San Diego Humane Society's incredible VOLUNTEERS! These folks are simply the beast, and we otterly appreciate everything they do." (San Diego Humane Society via Facebook)
  • Book recommendation: "This week's recommendation comes from Humanities Librarian Steven Torres-Roman. He recommends Mark Lawrence's 2011 gritty fantasy novel, 'Prince of Thorns.' For his full review read the April 9, 2023 issue of the San Diego Union-Tribune." (San Diego Central Library via Facebook)
