Paramedics took the victim to a hospital for treatment of at least one gunshot wound. The severity of her injuries was unclear, though she was able to speak to deputies when they arrived, Lt. Matthew Carpenter said.

The man believed to have shot her then holed up in the home with an AR-15 and refused to surrender, prompting the sheriff’s department to call in special weapons and tactics personnel, Carpenter said.

In the late morning, deputies and crisis negotiators were in contact with the suspect, who was alone in the house and refusing to cooperate, the lieutenant said.

The relationship between the suspect and victim, if any, remained unclear.

Sheriff’s personnel closed parts of Longdale and Skyline drives in the area as a precaution as the stalemate got underway.
