24 Dead In Fires; Driver Shoots Self; Fatal Train Crash; Bay Area Quake: NorCal In Brief

Took a break from the news? Worry not. We've rounded up some of the stories you missed in NorCal on Saturday and Sunday.

NORTHERN CALIFORNIA — As we head into the new week, we've rounded up the stories you may have missed Saturday and Sunday to prepare you for Monday.

But before we jump into Northern California's top stories, residents should know that a frost advisory is in effect Monday morning as temperatures could reach as low as 32 degrees in the interior portions of the Central Coast and Bay Area, excluding the North Bay, according to the National Weather Service.

Additionally, a wind advisory is in effect through Tuesday morning for the North Bay interior mountains.

"Dry conditions continue this week with mostly clear skies, some gusty offshore winds, and chilly mornings," NWS San Francisco forecasters wrote Monday.

More Northern California fire crews have been sent to Southern California to help with the devastation caused by wildfire burning in the Los Angeles area.

More than two dozen people have now perished in the Palisades and Eaton Fires, the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner announced Sunday night. The grim total includes 16 lives lost to the Eaton Fire and eight killed in the Palisdaes Fire.

In other news, a 3.5 magnitude earthquake was felt Sunday morning in the Bay Area. The earthquake comes just two days after a 3.7 temblor hit the San Francisco Zoo on Friday.

A driver whose vehicle was on fire stopped on northbound Highway 101 and shot himself, the California Highway Patrol said.

Plus, a later-than-normal winter surge in COVID-19 cases is catching some California residents by surprise as infections nationwide reached the highest levels in three years just as Americans were gathering with their families for the holidays.
