70 Degree Temps, 50 MPH Wind Gusts: Bay Area Forecast Timeline

Some Bay Area cities could post record highs this week.

SAN FRANCISCO — A tangle of low and high-pressure systems will make for an unseasonably warm and dry week in the Bay Area as offshore winds fan wind gusts as high as 50 mph, according to the National Weather Service.

A notable oddity for early January, forecasters said Monday that weather models showed a consensus "0 percent" chance for rain in the Bay Area through at least Jan. 15 and "very unlikely" odds lingering even deeper into the month.

"It's unusual to have a dry spell this time of year," NWS Bay Area said. "The last time SFO failed to record measurable rain from Jan. 3 - Jan. 15 was back in 2015 during the drought years."

According to the San Francisco Chronicle, some North Bay communities could hit 70 degrees this week and set new daily temperature records, with Thursday likely to run warmest across the region.

The weather service said a building ridge of high pressure in the Great Basin would fan several rounds of gusty offshore winds. A wind advisory will take effect Monday evening at higher elevations, including in the East Bay Hills, Eastern Santa Clara Hills and Marin Hills.

While forecasters expect the lowlands and interior valleys will not meet the criteria for a wind advisory Tuesday, it will be breezy regionwide. The weather service said models favor a break in the wind Wednesday before another round of gusts that could trigger additional advisories later in the week.

Along the coast, forecasters warned dangerous beach conditions will persist through Tuesday, with an elevated risk of sneaker waves, strong rip currents and 20-foot breaking waves along the Pacific coast.

According to the weather service, the Bay Area can expect "more of the same" in the extended forecast, with a third round of wind gusts likely over the weekend and more dry heat next week. Fortunately, the weather service said recent rains should help minimize the typical fire hazards associated with a dry spell.
