SAN LEANDRO, CA — A four-year-old boy was shot in the leg when a gunman randomly fired into his residence, according to the San Leandro Police Department. The child was taken to the hospital and is expected to recover. An Oakland man has been arrested in the case.

The shooting happened just after 2 p.m. on Feb. 28 in the 400 block of West Juana Avenue. Investigators determined that the suspect, 33-year-old Adam Johnson of Oakland, went to an adjacent residence to recover a stolen vehicle.

Police say that the suspect "stood in the shared driveway of a multi-unit residential property, and fired around 5 shots in quick succession with a handgun into one of the residences. Johnson then fired a single shot into an adjacent residential unit, striking the 4-year-old. Officers conducting a protective sweep of the first targeted residence located the intended victim inside uninjured."

Johnson has been charged by the Alameda County District Attorney’s office with two counts of attempted homicide plus enhancements and special circumstances relating to firearm use and great bodily injury.

Police investigators used surveillance footage, Flock Public Safety Cameras, and law enforcement intelligence sources to identify Johnson, who was taken into custody on Feb. 29.
