SAN LEANDRO, CA — Three people died, four people are hospitalized, and two people escaped unharmed from a chaotic two-alarm house fire early Thursday morning in San Leandro.

One of the patients hospitalized is in critical condition.

Fire crews were dispatched at 5:26 a.m. to a two-story home in the 2000 block of Altamont Road in San Leandro, according to the app Pulse Point.

Crews found the house fully engulfed in flames when they arrived, and called in a second alarm.

The crews beat back intense flames, but the inferno took a terrible toll.

"What we know now is that nine people were in the house at the time. Six were transported to local hospitals," said Alameda County Fire Department spokesperson Cheryl Hurd. Two of the six who were sent to hospitals died.

Another person was reported missing.

Cadaver dogs were brought to the home to search for the missing person. The Alameda County coroner recovered a body.

A dog also perished in the fire. Its remains have been recovered.

There was confusion Thursday morning about how many people were injured, as first responders dealt with conflicting information.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, although Hurd said it appeared to have started inside the house, which was shared by a multigenerational family.
