San Leandro's Mayoral Race Heats Up As Vote Counts Wind Down

The winner will replace Mayor Pauline Russo Cutter who was ineligible to run having reached her term limit.

SAN LEANDRO, CA — With only 390 separating them and an unknown number of votes left to count, Bryan Azevedo and Juan Gonzalez III remain in a heated battle to become San Leandro’s next mayor.

Azevedo, who currently serves as the council’s District 2 representative, is leading the race according to the numbers released by AC Vote Monday, Nov. 14, with 3,823 votes or 39.61 percent of the vote to Gonzalez’s 3,433 or 35.57 percent. Other mayoral candidates remain in the backseat with Lee Thomas securing 2,116 or 21.92 percent and Christopher Bammer with 280 votes or 2.9 percent of the vote.

The winner of that race will replace outgoing Mayor Pauline Russo Cutter.

AC vote, Alameda County’s vote counting and reporting agency has been posting “unofficial results” since the election, so the count as reported has not been finalized, with votes still being counted.

In San Leandro’s District 1, Celina Reynes leads with 4,339 votes or 46.28 percent over Kenneth Pon (3,723 or 39.71 percent) and David L. Anderson Sr. (1,313 or 14.01 percent.)

In District 3 incumbent Victor Aguilar is running unopposed and will retain his seat on council.

San Leandro’s District 5 race will see either Monique Tate or Xouhoa Bowen replace outgoing Council Member Corina Lopez. Tate currently leads in that race with 4,511 votes or 52.41 percent to Bowen’s 4,096 or 47.59 percent.

Russo Cutter, Cox and Lopez were ineligible to run having reached their term limits, opening those seats up to new representation for residents in their districts.

AC Vote’s next update is expected Friday, Nov. 18.
