Come 'Rock The Block' With The San Leandro Boys & Girls Clubs

The annual event will feature plenty of food, music and fun, organizers say.

SAN LEANDRO, CA — The Boys & Girls Clubs of San Leandro will hold its second annual “Rock the Block,” community festival from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 9.

Held at the recently renovated Clubhouse, 2200 San Leandro Boulevard in San Leandro, the event will feature a celebration of food, music and fun, a social media posting on the event said.

The event is open to everyone in the community and includes a welcome by the Oakland A’s very own Stomper.

Attendees can get warmed up in a soccer game with the Oakland Roots or take a beginner skateboarding lesson with Rob Skate Academy.

"There’s even a Kid Zone with an inflatable slide and bounce house," A news release announcing the event said. "An open-air train for children will circle the perimeter of the Clubhouse grounds so you can take it all in."

The Alameda County Sheriff’s Office will will be on hand with its interactive mobile Crime Scene Unit so participants can solve a mystery using DNA, fingerprints, and more.

Other activities include the Lawrence Hall of Science STEM activity, CPR classes from the America Heart Association, a far-flung catapult activity at the USS Hornet booth, a Ghirardelli rock painting station, free haircuts and face painting.

After all that fun, attendees might need a bite to eat to carry them through the remainder of the day so be sure to take advantage of the free food offerings, including hotdogs, popcorn, and even a Ghirardelli sundae with all the toppings.

For those looking for something a bit more substantial, food will also be available to purchase from a variety of ffood vendors including Smash Burgers.

Attendees can also participate in The Boys & Girls Clubs of San Leandro raffle by following the BGCSL on Instagram @bgcsl.

"You’ll be entered to win one of several prizes, from bicycles to school-supply-filled backpacks to A’s adult baseball caps, A’s children’s socks, and even an autographed baseball," the news release said.

Attendees can also get a sneak peak at one of the Boys & Girls Clubs of San Leandro Club's newest additions, the Teen Café funded in part by Fremont Bank.

"In partnership with UrbanBloc and Zocalo Coffee, the café is housed in a renovated 30-foot container painted a punchy shade of magenta and placed on the Club’s grassy courtyard," the news release said. "As part of the Club’s innovative workforce development program, participating teens will receive real-life experience learning to create business and marketing plans and developing inventory control strategies while maintaining outstanding customer service standards."

The café is scheduled to open this fall, the Boys & Girls Clubs of San Leandro said.

Free parking is available at the San Leandro BART Station, off San Leandro Boulevard and Davis Street. Bike parking is also available at the Clubhouse.
