Downed Tree Frees Birds At Oakland Zoo
The tree fell onto an aviary, tearing the mesh. Zookeepers are trying to recapture the missing birds.

OAKLAND, CA — Six birds escaped from an aviary at the Oakland Zoo after a tree fell onto it and tore the mesh amid stormy weather earlier this week, zoo officials said Wednesday.
Zoo employees have been taking nonstop shifts to try to retrieve all six birds, who have stayed on the zoo grounds and do not pose a threat to the public or other zoo animals, according to Oakland Zoo officials.
No other animals were injured by the fallen tree, and parts of the African Savanna exhibit at the zoo may be closed as crews repair damage to the aviary, zoo officials said.

"We are proud of our animal care team for their tireless dedication to the safety and care of these birds," the Oakland Zoo wrote on Twitter late Wednesday.
No update on the search for the birds was immediately available Thursday morning.
