Fatal Marina Crash: Woman Identified

SAN LEANDRO, CA — A woman who died after her car sank in the marina last week has been identified as 24-year-old Mila Araujo. She was a San Leandro resident, according to the Alameda County Coroner's Bureau.

On Tuesday last week, police received several 911 calls just after 11 p.m. The callers said that a vehicle had crashed into the water at the marina and was completely submerged.

Several police officers rushed to the marina and were told by witnesses that a woman was screaming in the vehicle as it sank.

Before the fire department could arrive with a water rescue team, SLPD Officers entered the chilly water to find the car and the woman trapped inside.

It took both the Alameda County Fire Department and the police officers to finally pull the woman from the vehicle. By then, it was too late.

Despite life-saving measures, Araujo was pronounced dead at a local trauma hospital.

"We are grateful for the swift actions taken by SLPD Officers and Alameda County Fire Department in rescuing the victim," SLPD Captain Ali Khan said. "We are saddened by the news that she passed away. Our thoughts and prayers are with her and her family."

The water temperature of San Francisco Bay was approximately 57 degrees Tuesday night.
