'Grumpy' Rescued Owl Gets Zoo Checkup

The Great Horned Owl was rescued by CHP officers from I-580 in Castro Valley

OAKLAND, CA — A Great Horned Owl is fortunate to be alive after it was rescued by California Highway Patrol officers from the center divide of Interstate Highway 580 in Castro Valley.

The injured bird was taken to the Oakland Zoo Animal Hospital for a thorough exam.

Dr. Alex Herman determined the owl was stable enough to transport to Lindsay Wildlife Rehabilitation Hospital in Walnut Creek.

The owl has some bruising on its breast and pelvis, and turned up his nose up at a fine dinner of white mice.

It will continue its rehabilitation. Lindsay provides free veterinary care to native California wildlife — birds, mammals and reptiles are all welcome.
