Kitchen Damaged in Thursday Evening Apartment Fire

Stove and cabinets in a mixed-use apartment were destroyed in the one-alarm fire. No injuries were reported.

Bay City News — A one-alarm kitchen fire broke out at a mixed-use apartment building in San Leandro Thursday night, an Alameda County fire battalion chief said.

A call came in about a fire at a building located at 13605 136th Avenue at 10:39 p.m.

Arriving firefighters found the kitchen on fire on a second floor end-unit apartment, fire Battalion Chief Ronnie Oatis said.

The fire did not spread beyond the kitchen area and was contained within 10 minutes of firefighters' arrival, Oatis said.

The kitchen took the brunt of the damage, with $5,000 of damage to contents. Oatis said a stove and cabinets were destroyed from the flames.

Witnesses had reported smoke coming from the building. One evacuation was made to a resident from an adjacent apartment unit, Oatis said.

The resident was not home at the time of the fire and had not been reached as of 2 a.m. As of this morning, the resident will not be able to return home, Oatis said.

No injuries were reported to civilians or firefighters. The cause of the fire is under investigation, Oatis said.
