New Fire Chief Appointed In East Bay City

The announcement comes more than a year after the city's last fire chief retired.

HAYWARD, CA — A new fire chief has been appointed in Hayward, more than a year since someone was permanently at the helm.

Ryan Hamre was appointed the new fire chief, effective Monday, according to Hayward city officials.

He brings 24 years of firefighting experience and takes over the position from interim Fire Chief Eric Vollmer. Vollmer had led the department in the interim role since Fire Chief Garrett Contreras retired on June 7, 2024, officials said.
