Small, Homemade Explosive Device Brought Into Oakland Courthouse

OAKLAND, CA — Bomb squad members were sent Monday morning to the Wiley W. Manuel Courthouse in Oakland after someone brought in a small explosive device.

A community member connected to a civil lawsuit brought a "very small homemade explosive device" into the Wiley W. Manuel Courthouse on Washington Street, near 6th street, the Alameda County Sheriff's Office said.

"Man claims device was previously planted on his car by someone," the sheriff's office tweeted around 10:30 a.m. Monday. "Scene is safe and no further threats."

Further details weren't immediately released.

A court reporter reportedly had to interrupt a live, virtual courtroom hearing to say she was being "evacuated due to a bomb threat," Twitter user Tyrene Pamstein tweeted.

A photo posted by KGO-TV showed a bomb squad vehicle parked outside the building. Multiple roads in the area were closed.
