Which San Mateo Elementary Schools Were Recognized For Excellence In Student Success?

Student performance at a dozen San Mateo schools stood out among all California schools.

SAN MATEO, CA — The California Department of Education awarded 12 schools in San Mateo County the 2025 California Distinguished School Award recently after they performed well on several State indicators.

The program honored 336 elementary schools statewide after scrutinizing them in several categories such as suspension rate, chronic absenteeism and student performance in English and math.

The 12 schools are:

  • Belmont-Redwood Shores Elementary, Central Elementary
  • Brisbane Elementary, Brisbane Elementary
  • Burlingame Elementary, Hoover Elementary
  • Burlingame Elementary, Roosevelt Elementary
  • Hillsborough City Elementary, North Hillsborough
  • Hillsborough City Elementary, West Hillsborough
  • Hillsborough City Elementary, South Hillsborough
  • Jefferson Elementary, Monticello Elementary
  • Millbrae Elementary, Meadows Elementary
  • San Carlos Elementary, Brittan Acres Elementary
  • San Carlos Elementary, Mariposa
  • Redwood City Elementary, North Star Academy

Seven of the 12 schools — Central, Hoover, North, South, West, Mariposa, and North Star — were also recognized in 2023.

This is the third time Central, Hoover, and North received the award since 2018.
