73 Citations Issued For Drivers In This Bay Area County's Pedestrian Safety Enforcement

The sheriff's office has increased enforcement around pedestrian safety.

REDWOOD CITY, CA — The San Mateo County Sheriff's Office is increasing pedestrian safety enforcement in September and on Tuesday conducted an operation that led to 73 citations for drivers in San Carlos, police said.

“Safety starts with each of us. Simple actions like slowing down, putting away distractions and yielding at crosswalks can save lives. By respecting the right of way of pedestrians, we can help ensure our roadways are safer for everyone,” said Sheriff Christina Corpus. “These ongoing safety operations aren’t just about enforcement. They’re a vital way to address traffic concerns in our communities in real time.”

On Tuesday, the SMC sheriff's office conducted a pedestrian safety operation at two locations in San Carlos where deputies monitored crosswalks and popular pedestrian routes.

Police said they issued 73 citations for infractions, including cell phone use, failing to yield to a crossing pedestrian and not following traffic signals.

The sheriff's office stated they will be conducting more of these operations throughout the month as part of September being Pedestrian Safety Month.
