"We sympathize with the financial burdens that federal employees are faced with due to this unprecedented situation," transit officials say.

SAN MATEO COUNTY, CA — Furloughed federal workers can get free bus and train rides in San Mateo County starting Thursday, according to the San Mateo County Transit District.
The workers can ride for free by showing their federal government employee identification cards to bus operators on SamTrans and to conductors on Caltrain, the transit agency said.
The free service will remain available for the duration of the government shutdown.
