Hours-Long San Mateo SWAT Standoff Ends In Man's Arrest

Police said that the suspect was erratic, made suicidal statements and told officers to shoot him.

SAN MATEO, CA — A male suspect was arrested Monday in San Mateo after he barricaded himself in an apartment for nearly five hours following an effort to arrest him on a felony warrant, police said Tuesday.

Officers tried to serve a warrant on the suspect at 7:15 p.m. in the 400 block of North Bayshore Boulevard. After officers let the suspect know they were at his apartment, the person locked himself in his apartment and refused to come out. Police said that inside the suspect was erratic, made suicidal statements and told officers to shoot him.

Officers trained in crisis intervention started negotiations, police said.

A SWAT team and a crisis negotiation team also tried to help the suspect work through his crisis. Police said that for nearly five hours crisis negotiators spoke with the suspect by telephone until he ended communications and refused to talk any more with negotiators.

After a SWAT team took the suspect into custody, he was taken to a hospital for a 72-hour a mental health evaluation. Following the hold, he will be taken to the county jail on the felony warrant.

Police said they are not releasing the suspect's name since he is receiving mental health treatment.
