Bay Area Sheriff Warns Of Dangerous Currents After Tsunami Advisory Lifted

After a massive earthquake put the west coast on high alert for a tsunami, strong currents may still exist.

SAN MATEO COUNTY, CA — Despite the tsunami advisory being canceled, the sheriff is warning there could still be dangerous currents this week in San Mateo County.

“We are fortunate that the Tsunami Advisory did not result in any injuries or significant damage to our coastal communities,” said San Mateo County Sheriff Christina Corpus. “All throughout the night, our deputies were vigilant and ready to respond to protect lives. I am grateful to our deputies and members of the Sheriff’s Office for their efforts and commitment.”

Corpus said the sheriff’s office was prepared to respond to a variety of emergencies during the Tsunami Advisory Tuesday night and into Wednesday morning.

When the U.S. National Tsunami Warning Center issued a Tsunami Advisory for San Mateo County Tuesday night, Corpus said sheriff’s deputies cleared beaches and monitored waterways to ensure public safety.

While the Tsunami Advisory has since been lifted, dangerous currents could still exist and Corpus said community members should use caution near beaches and waterways.
