SMPD Arrests Macy's Robbery Suspect

A Hayward man was arrested in Fremont Sunday after police allege he stole perfume from a San Mateo Macy's and tussled with loss prevention.

SAN MATEO, CA — Officers worked with loss prevention agents to track down a man accused of stealing perfumes from a San Mateo Macy's then getting into a scuffle with the person who tried to stop him, according to police.

In a news release Monday, the police department said officers responded to a reported shoplifting and assault call shortly before 8:30 p.m. Friday at the Hillsdale Shopping Center. Loss prevention agents told police a man had placed several bottles of perfume in a bag, then abandoned several bottles and fled the store when he realized he was being followed.

The agent approached the man outside the store and attempted to retrieve the items and a physical struggle ensued before the man left in a vehicle. The agent provided police with the license plate number.
