A cooking fire damaged an apartment in a San Rafael two-story complex on Tuesday afternoon, forcing five residents from their home but causing no injuries, fire officials said.

The San Rafael Fire Department said the Marin County Regional Fire Dispatch Center received multiple reports of smoke coming from a unit in the 110-120 block of Larkspur Street at 4:40 p.m. Crews arrived to find a kitchen fire burning inside a first-floor apartment, with all occupants safely evacuated.

The blaze began on the stove and spread into the overhead cabinets, but firefighters contained the flames before they could move beyond the kitchen, fire officials said. It was brought under control after about an hour and 30 minutes.

Damage was limited to the stove and surrounding cabinets, but other parts of the apartment sustained smoke and water damage. The burned unit was declared uninhabitable, but residents of the rest of the apartment complex were allowed to return home after roughly an hour, the department said.
