SAN RAFAEL, CA — The Marin Shakespeare Company announced they will premiere “Buttercup,” a comic fable about class, faith, and motherhood by a Bay Area-based writer, on April 5 at its San Rafael theatre.

After his work in political writing and film, J.D. Murphy’s first theatrical work, “Buttercup,” looks at 1880s France through a satirical lens.

The production is directed by renowned Bay Area theatre artist Nancy Carlin of the Berkeley Rep, American Conservator Theatre and Shakespeare Theatre.

According to "Buttercup’s" official website, the production is inspired by Guy de Maupassant’s 1880 short story, “Boule de Suif,” and reimagines the Franco-Prussian war fable, and its heroine Joan of Arc, with a healthy dose of absurdity.

The play’s opening night is at 7:30 p.m. April 5 at the Marin Shakespeare Company’s Theatre at 514 4th St., San Rafael.
