Future Marin County Park Will Be Funded By Measure A

The park will be located by a highly populated, ethnically diverse and lower-income section of the County.

MARIN COUNTY, CA — A new park in the Canal neighborhood of San Rafael is an example of a project Marin County Parks considers suitable for Measure A contributions.

In 2022, Marin County voters renewed Measure A, the quarter-cent sales tax supporting local parks and open space. This expanded funding allows for the acquisition of new recreation areas, especially in communities with the greatest need.

In September, the Marin County Board of Supervisors authorized a $1.35 million Measure A grant, combined with $500,000 from San Rafael and $1.505 million in private funds from Marin Community Foundation and individual donors, to secure the $3.355 million property purchase with the Trust for Public Land and other partners.

The City of San Rafael closed escrow on the $3.355 million purchase of the 1.65-acre boatyard on the canal's south side, planning to build a waterfront park for the historically underserved, largely Latino community.

"Through Measure A, we are increasing access to parks and open spaces while prioritizing equity and inclusion," said District 4 County Supervisor Dennis Rodoni, who represents the Canal neighborhood. "This project will help ensure all residents, especially those in the Canal neighborhood, have safe access to recreation and the waterfront."

Canal residents and city planners have identified a critical need for a pedestrian and bicycle bridge over the canal to connect to Montecito Plaza and San Rafael High School. Currently, pedestrians and cyclists must use the East Francisco Drive bridge, which is less safe and convenient. San Rafael recently secured funds to analyze the feasibility of a bridge starting at Canal Boatyard Park.

Voters first approved Measure A in 2012. Its 2022 renewal introduced a greater emphasis on wildfire fuel reduction, equitable programming, and supporting sustainable agriculture.
