Marin School Enrollment Plummets: Report

Enrollment at Marin's public and charter schools have fallen 10 percent over the last three years, The Marin Independent Journal reports.

MARIN COUNTY, CA — Marin public and charter schools have experienced a precipitous enrollment drop since the start of the pandemic, The Marin Independent Journal reports.

The county’s enrollment has fallen approximately 10 percent since the start of the pandemic, according to the report.

Enrollment fell from 32,374 at the start of the 2019-2020 academic year to 29,288 at the start of the 2022-23 academic year, the report said.

Several districts have seen even more pronounced enrollment declines according to the report. Reed-Union’s enrollment has fallen 25 percent since the start of the pandemic and Mill Valley and Larkspur-Corte Madera are down 19 and 18 percent respectively, the report said.

Ross Valley superintendent Marci Trahan, whose district saw a 17 percent enrollment decline, attributes around half the decline to families relocating, according to the report.

Novato Unified and Mill Valley experienced lesser declines of 4 and 7 percent, respectively, the report said.
