Off-Ramp Improvement Project Begins In San Rafael

Construction aims to ease traffic congestion at US-101 and I-580 interchange.

SAN RAFAEL, CA — Construction began this week on an $8.1 million project aimed at reducing traffic congestion at the Bellam Boulevard off-ramps on northbound U.S. Highway 101 and eastbound Interstate 580, according to the County of Marin.

The project, led by the Transportation Authority of Marin (TAM) in partnership with the County of Marin Department of Public Works (DPW), will add a second lane to the off-ramp and introduce a right-turn lane on Bellam Boulevard to improve traffic flow and merging.

Work began with the installation of temporary barriers, known as K-rail, along the right shoulder of the northbound US-101 Bellam Boulevard off-ramp. While traffic lanes will remain open, officials anticipate minor delays due to drivers adjusting to construction zone conditions.

The project will require periodic overnight closures of the Bellam Boulevard ramps between midnight and 5 a.m., with the first set of closures scheduled from March 17 through March 20. No daytime closures are expected.

Caltrans, which owns and operates the highway, must approve all project adjustments and closures.
