Surveillance Cameras Installed To Stop Illegal Dumping In San Rafael

The city will install smart cameras at hotspots known for illegal dumping.

SAN RAFAEL, CA — The City of San Rafael started deploying smart camera surveillance trailers on Oct. 24 at hotspots in the city known for illegal dumping starting, police announced Thursday.

The San Rafael Police Department said they will be using these cameras to hold offenders accountable, stating they can expect fines ip to $1,000 and criminal charges of caught.

"Illegal dumping isn't just an eyesore; it's an environmental hazard and a crime that harms our neighborhoods and drains hundreds of thousands of dollars in city resources every year," police said. "When people illegally abandon trash, furniture, and construction debris in our neighborhoods, it takes away funds that should be going towards safer parks, road repairs, and other essential services that benefit everyone."

Police said those who have any unwanted items or waste can visit www.cityofsanrafael.org/junk or call 415-485-3174 to learn how to dispose of those items safely and legally.

San Rafael apartment residents can also drop off bulky waste items and junk at the City's drop-off event, which occurs on the last Saturday of every month from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Pickleweed Park, 50 Canal St.
