Pit Bull That Bit 4-Year-Old in Face to be Put Down

The 4-year-old Dublin girl that was bitten in the face by a pit bull last Friday returned home in good health Tuesday, the girl's mother said.

The family asked not to be identified to protect their privacy, but they shared how the pit bull attack happened and its aftermath.

While visiting friends in San Ramon, the girl walked to the neighbor's front yard and up to the pit bull. The dog then clamped down on the 4-year-old's face, tearing her nostril and cheek muscle.

The dog's owner was able to intervene, and the girl was rushed to Children's Hospital in Oakland.

She underwent successful reconstructive surgery to repair the damage and is expected to make a full recovery. Her father's is a firefighter, and his colleagues rallied around the family at the hospital.

"She's doing great," the mother said in a phone interview with Patch. "It was just one of those freak accidents,  but she's a warrior girl, a trooper."

The dog's owners released it to , where it's being quarantined. After a 10-day review period, which began on the day of the attack, the dog is expected to be euthanized, said Lt. Joe De Costa.

The family said there is no ill will felt toward the owners of the dog.

"We are healing together," the mother said. "They have been traumatized by this. Hopefully (healing together) sets a precedent and people follow our lead."
