Bay to Breakers, San Francisco Bay Area

A Celebration of Community, Health, and Student Volunteerism

Since its inception in 1912, the 12K Bay to Breakers race has been a staple of San Francisco’s cultural and athletic scene. An iconic event in San Francisco, it is more than just a marathon - it's a vibrant celebration of community spirit, health, and wellness. Each year, this historic race attracts tens of thousands of participants, from serious runners to festive costume-clad revelers, all traversing the scenic route from the Embarcadero to the Great Highway. Among the many who contribute to the success of this event are the student volunteers, whose enthusiasm and dedication help ensure the race runs smoothly. This year, one of the youngest volunteers making a significant impact is Raiden Lee from Windermere Middle School.

Volunteering at Bay to Breakers offers students a unique opportunity to support marathon runners directly. Positioned at various stations along the course, they ensure that participants stay hydrated and energized. Their encouragement and cheers provide a much-needed morale boost, helping runners push through the challenging segments of the race.

For Thoren, this volunteer experience has already sparked an interest in running as he waves enthusiastically, “I am going to participate as a runner next year!” - saluting the runners as he witnessed firsthand human endurance and community spirit.
