Council Decides Not to Hire Public Information Employee

With San Ramon facing significant budget issues, the City Council decided to rescind its decision to hire a public information officer at its meeting Tuesday, the Contra Costa Times reports.

At its meeting on July 10, the council voted 3-2 to hire the position that would cost about $159,000.

But, at the same meeting, the council later heard a presentation from its communciation team about a strategy to improve its outreach to the city, using mostly social media.

The strategy convinced the council, and it voted 4-0 to not hire the position at this time.

"We're in a deficit. We don't have excess money," Mayor Bill Clarkson was quoted as saying in The Times. "The staff had really put their heart and soul in developing a strategy to improve communications. We can increase communication dramatically and save money (without filling the position.)"
