Head To Head Races; Sheriff & DA Candidates Battle It Out: CA Primary

SAN RAMON, CA — Tuesday is Election Day for the California primary when voters will decide key races in the Tri-Valley and at the state level.

The first round of result numbers should be available shortly after 8 p.m., according to the county elections division.

Arguably one of the biggest local races is for Contra Costa Sheriff. Incumbent David Livingston is running to hold his spot against Benjamin Therriault. Livingston was elected at the 22nd Sheriff of Contra Costa County in June of 2010.

Prosecutor Mary Knox has had a vocal campaign running against incumbent District Attorney Diana Becton.

Joseph Rubay is again challenging Rebecca Bauer-Kahan for the 16th State Assembly District seat. Bauer-Kahan has represented the Tri-Valley district since 2018. Rubay has challenged her multiple times.

County superintendent of schools Lynn Mackey is the only person on the ballot for her seat.

In local races such as sheriff, DA and superintendent of county schools, candidates need a 50 percent plus 1 majority to win. If no candidate gets 50 percent plus 1, the top two have a runoff in November. This means local races could see winners on Election Day.

In federal and state races, the top two candidates go on to the November election.

• Alcosta Senior and Community Center, 9300 Alcosta Boulevard

*Available during business hours of Monday through Friday 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
