San Ramon Man Found Dead In River: Police
73-year-old William Knight was found dead in an Alturas river after he'd been missing for a few days, police said.
SAN RAMON, CA — A 73-year-old San Ramon man was found dead in Alturas, a rural area in far northeastern California.
William Robert Knight was on a motorcycle trip to Idaho, and was communicating with his family until Thursday, May 30, according to a news release from the Modoc County Sheriff’s Office. He was due to return to San Ramon June 1, and when he didn’t return, his family reported him missing.
Knight’s cell phone had pinged a cell tower in Alturas June 1, so on Monday, June 3, Modoc County Sheriff’s deputies began searching the nearby area with assistance from the San Ramon Police Department, the California Highway Patrol, and members of Knight’s family.

At around 6 that evening, a driver called the sheriff’s communications center to advise them of a body found in the river south of Alturas. Deputies positively identified the remains as Knight. Knight’s motorcycle was also located in the water nearby. His family was notified.
The Modoc County Sheriff’s Office and CHP continue to investigate the death.
