Pipe Repair Taking Longer Than Expected at San Ramon Community Center

The damaged water main at the was deeper in the ground than first believed, pushing back the expected time for the repairs to be completed and for the community center to reopen, Facilities Maintenance Program Manager Sandy Tenborg said.

After the , there was hope the repairs could be completed to reopen the center on Wednesday morning.

But instead of the pipe being five feet underground, it was closer to seven feet. Tenborg said it's possible for the pipe to be repaired by Thursday, but it's more likely the community center will be closed until Friday.

"We still have to do more digging to expose the entire pipe and then replace some of the valves," Tedborg said. "After that, we have to re-energize the pipe (with water) and that will take about 24 hours."

Meetings and events at the community center have been rescheduled to other city locations by Parks and Community Service staff, Tedborg said. (Here's a link to where meeting and events have been relocated to.)

This was the second pipe to break at a San Ramon community center in the last year, at the  in July.

"Some of these facilities are 20-plus years old and the seams break over time," Tedborg said. "You just have to go in there and glue it back together. It's an age thing."
