San Ramon City Hall To Host MLK Day Open Mic Ceremony

The community is invited to reflect on the enduring legacy and vision of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

SAN RAMON, CA — The San Ramon Valley Diversity Coalition is hosting is fourth annual Dr. Martin Luther, Jr. Open Mic Celebration on Monday at the San Ramon City Hall Rotunda.

The ceremony will include an open mic portion in which community members are invited to answer the questions, "How has Dr. King's work and legacy influenced or impacted your community?" and "Why is Dr. King's work and legacy still important in the 21st century?"

Anyone is welcome to share a poem, song, or speech addressing these questions, and no pre-registration is required. Participants are asked to keep their presentations family friendly, and to 90 seconds or under.

The program will last from 2 to 3:30 p.m., followed by a reception from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Email the San Ramon Valley Diversity Coalition at srvdc.members@gmail.com.

The following day, the Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors will host a televised ceremony called "Celebrating Our Shared Humanity" to honor Dr. King's work and vision. The hour-long ceremony begins at 11 a.m. at the Board of Supervisors Chambers at 1025 Escobar Street in Martinez, and will include the introduction of the 2025 Humanitarian of the Year and the Student Humanitarian of the Year, and a free buffet lunch.

The ceremony can be watched online here, or at contracostatv.gov. It will also be broadcast on Contra Costa Television at Comcast Channel 27, AT&T Channel 99, and Astound Channels 32 and 1027.
