San Ramon Has Talent: "Some Day"
In his latest poem, Philip Henika reflects on loving pets we know will leave us one day.

SAN RAMON, CA — All pet owners know the feeling: overcome with love for your furry friend, you realize this won't last forever. In his poem for his dog Fulton, San Ramon resident Philip Henika expresses his love for his dog, an AKC Distinguished Therapy Dog who is part of Valley Humane Society's Paws to Read and Paws To Heal programs and has made over 500 visits to schools, libraries, care homes and more. It is a reminder to treasure the moments we have.

Some Day
For Fulton
There might come a time
When my old Lab
Might not be able to
Jump
Into my recliner lap.
But that time
Is not now.
Fulton likes to look
Out the window.
There is something
Out there
That only dogs can see.
I have to ask:
What do you see?
He eventually falls
Asleep.
I read to a dreaming lap dog.
Sometimes a muted bark.
Sometimes a wagging tail.
He turns around.
He buries his head
Into my lap.
I tell him that he is a
Good dog,
An amazing dog!
Some day,
He won’t be here.
