San Ramon STEM Teams Named State Finalists In Samsung STEM Competition

Three student teams from Cal High and Dougherty Valley won $2500 in Samsung products through excelling at STEM challenges.

SAN RAMON, CA — Three teachers and their teams from Dougherty Valley High School and California High School were among 300 schools named as state finalists in the Samsung Solve for Tomorrow competition. The competition challenges students in grades 6-12 to create STEM-driven solutions for local challenges. For example, the Cal High team, led by Rae Anne Crandall, are working to develop a device that interprets facial expressions and relays the information in real-time to help people with visual impairments.

The other state finalist teams are led by Dougherty Valley High School teachers Katherine Huang and Yin Lau.

Each team will receive a $2,500 prize package of Samsung technology and classroom resources. The teams will move forward for a chance to be named as state winners, which would mean $12,000 in Samsung products and resources for their schools. The winners are expected to be announced in late January.
