San Ramon Student Appointed To Contra Costa County Board Of Education

Students appointed to the board can make motions and cast preferential votes in non-closed sessions.

SAN RAMON, CA — A Concord student was appointed to the Contra Costa County Board of Education this week, a competitive honor that allows students to weigh in on important issues and propose their own ideas.

Keerthi Eraniyan, a rising junior at California High School in San Ramon, is one of two students who were appointed, according to Cathy McSweeney, a spokesperson for San Ramon Valley Unified School District.

Eraniyan is a student journalist who has participated in the Contra Costa Youth Journalism Project. There, she wrote a number of articles, including stories about youth voter interest and Martin Luther King Jr. She has also served as a San Ramon Teen Council Ambassador.

In her new appointment, Eraniyan will be considered a full member of the board, excluding access to closed sessions and their materials as those discussions "often include topics such as student discipline or other sensitive matters."

She will have the ability to make motions that can be acted upon by the board and cast preferential votes on all matters other than those discussed in closed session.
