Authorities have confirmed the identity of a 17-year-old killed running along I-680. He was a lacrosse player and future Navy SEAL.
SAN RAMON, CA — Authorities have confirmed the identity of a 17-year-old boy who was fatally struck Nov. 27 while walking on I-680 southbound. The Contra Costa County Sheriff Coroner's Division confirmed to Patch that the victim's name is Samuel Grumet, a resident of San Ramon.
Grumet was about to turn 18 in December, according to a Facebook post from his aunt. He was a lacrosse player who was going to enter Navy SEAL training in the summer after receiving one of the highest scores on the Navy entrance test, his aunt said. "He was so excited about serving his country and I can’t overstate how proud I am of his accomplishments," she wrote.
Grumet was "incredibly smart" and "cruised through AP calculus" at Saugus High School in Santa Clarita, where he played lacrosse.

"Sam left an indelible mark on our team. We are grateful for the time we had with him and will cherish his memory. His talent and kindness will be greatly missed," the Saugus High School lacrosse team wrote in a post containing several photos of him.
Grumet was "a super funny guy," according to his aunt. "He had the best smile and sense of humor. He was incredibly close to his younger brother, and my kids adored their cousin. Tons of his friends have posted beautiful tributes and memories in the past few days. He was special to everyone."

Grumet was fatally struck at around 4:38 a.m. on November 27 on southbound I-680.
According to preliminary information, a 63-year-old woman from Richmond was driving a 2024 Subaru Crosstrek at around 60 to 65 miles per hour on I-680 southbound, just south of Crow Canyon Road, when Grumet came from the right shoulder of the freeway and into her lane, CHP said in a news release. The driver applied the brakes, but was unable to stop, and fatally struck him. Authorities arrived later to find him dead on the scene.
CHP Officer Tyler Hahn told Patch that it is still unknown why Grumet was walking along the freeway at 4:38 in the morning. Hahn said that the driver stayed on the scene and cooperated with authorities, and is not likely to face any charges.
