SANTA CRUZ COUNTY, CA — A 78-year-old Santa Cruz man died and four others were seriously injured in a three-car collision on State Route 17 at Sugarloaf Road on Saturday night, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The crash occurred around 9:55 p.m. when the man, driving a 2003 Honda Element, reportedly proceeded westbound, directly into oncoming traffic, officers said.

His vehicle reportedly collided with a northbound red 2022 Tesla Model Y driven by a 19-year-old Antioch man, which was then rear-ended by a black 2024 Honda Accord driven by a 24-year-old Daly City man, CHP noted.

Despite efforts by bystanders and emergency responders, the driver of the Honda Element was pronounced dead at the scene, according to officers.

Four other individuals were involved and hospitalized with serious injuries.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation. It is unknown if drugs or alcohol were factors.

The Santa Cruz County Sheriff-Coroner's Office will release the identity of the deceased.
