Coroner IDs Santa Cruz Crash Victim

He was struck near the intersection of Ocean Street and Soquel Avenue, police said.

SANTA CRUZ, CA — The Santa Cruz County Coroner has identified the man fatally struck by a car Tuesday night on Ocean Street in Santa Cruz.

Guadalupe Avila, 65, was declared dead at the scene after he was struck around 6:40 p.m. Tuesday in the 500 block of Ocean Street near Soquel Avenue, according to police and the coroner. He was unhoused and stayed in the area of Santa Cruz.

The car continued but pulled over a few blocks away to call 911, police said. Firefighters tried to save his life for 20 minutes to no avail.

The driver fully cooperated with the investigation and did not appear to be impaired, police said.
