Update: Jail Escapee Surrenders
This is the first escape from the Main Jail since 2003. Earlier this year two women escaped from the Blaine Street Women's Detention Facility and were caught.

Update 2:30 p.m.: Craig Souza was located and arrested early Tuesday afternoon following his break from jail. According to the Sheriff's Office, he called by phone to surrender and was interviewed and booked on escape charges.
Original Report: Santa Cruz Sheriff's Deputies are looking for a 34-year-old man who walked out of the Main Jail Monday evening after being booked for giving a false name to a police officer and probation violation.
Craig Souza, of Santa Cruz, walked to a staff door and was inadvertently let out of the jail at 259 Water St. at 7:02 p.m., according to video records.

Souza was in a seating area inside the jail when he got up and was buzzed through the door by a deputy monitoring the security camera.
Deputies realized he was gone at 7:14 p.m.

Souza's criminal record includes nonviolent drug offenses and theft.
He is 5 feet 10 inches tall, 170 pounds, with brown hair and green eyes.

The Sheriff's Department processes more than 12,000 prisoners a year at the jail. In the last escape, in 2003, two inmates snuck out of the laundry room.
