Man Turns Self In After Hitting, Killing Dog In Aptos

The dog was being walked by a couple who jumped to safety to avoid injury.

SANTA CRUZ COUNTY, CA — A 54-year-old man turned himself in a day after allegedly hitting and killing a dog being walked on the side of a road in Aptos and then fleeing the scene Saturday, California Highway Patrol officials said today.

The collision was reported at 1:10 p.m. Saturday on Spreckels Drive north of Seacliff Drive in the unincorporated coastal area of Santa Cruz County, according to the CHP. Officers arrived to learn that a Dodge pickup truck had struck and killed a border collie being walked by a couple on the shoulder of the roadway.

The couple jumped to safety and avoided injury as the truck also hit a retaining wall and a passing Toyota 4Runner, CHP officials said. The driver, Aptos resident Eric Brandenburg, fled but was later identified by tips and turned himself in the following morning. According to the CHP, Brandenburg could face charges of hit-and-run and driving on a suspended license.
