Santa Cruz locals gather 3,000 signatures to try and save Catalyst nightclub (ksbw.com) — Santa Cruz residents are rallying to protect the Catalyst nightclub from demolition, gathering more than 3,000 signatures to seek historic landmark status and block a proposed seven-story apartment project. Organizers argue the venue is central to the city’s cultural identity and plan to bring the petition to the Santa Cruz City Council for consideration.
   

3. California Supreme Court upholds public access walkway at Rio Del Mar Beach (ksbw.com) — Public beach access at Rio Del Mar in Santa Cruz County just got a major boost, as the California Supreme Court upheld a ruling that the contested walkway is public property. The decision preserves the county’s only fully paved, wheelchair-accessible path directly to the sand and shifts focus to when barrier fences will finally come down, possibly before a February 11 court date.
