Pedestrian Killed On Highway 1 In Santa Cruz County

The crash happened in the pre-dawn hours of Thursday.

SANTA CRUZ, CA — A pedestrian walking along state Highway 1 in Santa Cruz County was struck by a vehicle and killed early Thursday morning, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Investigators are still trying to identify the man who was killed.

Just before 4:30 a.m., a 52-year-old man was driving his Ford Ranger north on Highway 1 south of Scaroni Road northwest of the city of Santa Cruz while a man between the ages of 30 and 40 was walking in the area, the CHP said.

The Ford struck the pedestrian for reasons that are "still under investigation," CHP Officer Israel Murillo said. The pedestrian was severely injured and was declared dead at the scene.

At this time, the CHP does not believe driver impairment was a factor in the collision.
