Santa Cruz Woman Arrested After Fatal DUI Crash

Another person was hospitalized with major injuries.

SANTA CRUZ, CA — A Santa Cruz woman was arrested early Sunday morning in the wake of a fatal Watsonville car crash.

Johanna Mayapuga, 22, of Santa Cruz was arrested on suspicion of a felony driving under the influence of alcohol charge, according to the California Highway Patrol.

A 45-year-old Moss Landing woman — the passenger in the other involved car — was pronounced dead at the scene.

CHP was called to the area of southbound State Route 1, south of Airport Boulevard, shortly after midnight.

Mayapuga drove northbound in the southbound lanes, north of Main Street, CHP said. Her 2015 Nissan crashed head-on into the 2002 BMW containing a driver and the deceased, CHP said.

The Nissan stopped in the #3 lane of State Route 1 and the BMW stopped in the west shoulder, its rear on the guardrail.

The BMW driver, a 46-year-old Moss Landing man, and Mayapuga were hospitalized at Natividad Medical Center. He suffered major injuries, while hers were moderate, CHP said.
