UC Santa Cruz Academic Workers To Strike Monday: EdSource
The strike comes at a pivotal period of the academic calendar, with Santa Cruz in the final weeks of classes for its spring quarter.
SANTA CRUZ, CA — UC Santa Cruz graduate teaching assistants, researchers and other academic workers will strike Monday, the union representing 48,000 student workers across the University of California announced Friday.
The workers at Santa Cruz will be the first to strike after the union voted earlier this week to authorize its executive board to call for a strike at any time and at any campus. The union is alleging that UC has violated the rights of its members across the system's 10 campuses by retaliating against them for participating in pro-Palestinian protests.
The strike comes at a pivotal period of the academic calendar, with Santa Cruz in the final weeks of classes for its spring quarter. Union members were told to stop all teaching and wind down research work.

UC officials have called the strike unlawful and say the strike violates a no-strike clause in the union's contract. Union leaders, however, say the strike is legal because it stems from an unfair labor practice that the union has filed.
