A constitutional lawyer and political activist spoke with some alarm last week about the unchecked power of the United States in its spying abroad and at home.
Stephen Rohde, who is a chair of the ACLU Foundation of Southern California, condemned deadly drone attacks on U.S. citizens without judicial process. He also spoke out against the detention and torture of prisoners for years without charges filed and the lack of meaningful oversight and controls of domestic spying, according to the Santa Monica Democrats, which hosted the event Wednesday.
"Today, we are at a serious juncture, at least as serious as other periods of this modern history," Rohde said.
Rohde called on local Democrats to pressure Rep. Henry Waxman, Sen. Dianne Feinstein and Sen. Barbara Boxer to combat the abuses of power.
