Lincoln Middle School Teacher Nationally Honored

Marianna O'Brien is one of 50 in the nation to receive an exclusive fellowship.

A Lincoln Middle School teacher was nationally recognized last week when she was selected to take part in the exclusive Siemens STEM Institute Fellowship near Washington D.C.

Lincoln Middle School's Marianna O'Brien was chosen as one of only 50 teachers in the country to participate in the fellowship, which organizers said is designed to help teachers improve science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education in their home communities.

During the fellowship, O'Brien will hear from guest speakers in STEM industries, attend field trips to observe real world applications of STEM subjects and also collaborate with other teachers from around the country.

"Marianna and the other selected educators will be exposed to leading scientists, thought-leaders, personalities and innovators whose work across STEM disciplines shape and define our world today," Siemens Foundation spokesperson Megan Lavery said in a statement. "The goal of the Siemens STEM Institute is to create a group of STEM ambassadors who can take what they learn this summer back into their own classrooms and become key influencers in their schools and communities."

O'Brien will take place in the fellowship in August at the world headquarters of Discovery Communications outside of Washington, D.C. All expenses for the fellowship are covered by the Siemens STEM Institute.

Once the fellowship is completed, organizers said participants should be able to bring the ideas learned back to their schools to promote hands-on learning of the STEM subjects in the classroom.
